DEUTSCHER AND HACKETT FINAL AUCTION FOR 2011

Including major works by Charles Costantini, Frederick McCubbin (2), John Brack (6), Arthur Boyd (3), Fred Williams (6), Jeffrey Smart and a significant group of contemporary works

Melbourne Auction, Deutscher and Hackett, 30 November 2011 at 7pm
162 lots: Fine Art, Australian and International
Estimate range: $4,000,000 – 5,500,00

A rare pair of Frederick McCubbin portraits depicting two of the artist’s seven children, will be auctioned on 30th November in Melbourne (est: $150,000 – 200,000). These tender portraits show his first born daughter Mary holding a doll and his youngest daughter Kathleen born 14 years later. Also on offer from the 19th century is a large and rare watercolour by the convict artist Charles Henry Theodore Costantini (est: $120,000 – 150,000). Painted in 1855, it depicts the Tasmanian homestead and property of pastoralist James Jonathon Rollings.

With the major Fred Williams retrospective just concluded at the National Gallery of Australia, the auction includes two outstanding paintings by the artist, Ponds, Lysterfield (est: $240,000 – 300,000) and Yellow Gorse, Yan Yean (est:180,000 – 240,000), the latter from the collection of the late David Wynn AO, Adelaide. Never before seen at auction, Ponds, Lysterfield of 1966 is a perfect example of Williams highly regarded minimalist landscapes of the mid 1960s. In contrast, Yellow Gorse, Yan Yean of 1972 amply shows how the artist’s palette had evolved over the ensuing decade and the influence painting en plein air had upon his work. Again Deutscher and Hackett have been entrusted with the sale of two important paintings by John Brack, Three Women 1952 (est: $350,000 – 450,000) and Portrait of Tam Purves, 1958 (est: $400,000 – 600,000). Both from the 1950s, a critical decade in the art of John Brack, they show two diverse elements of Melbourne life – a satirical vision of three gaggling housewives alongside the thoughtful and serious portrait of the artist’s famous art dealer. Among the major modern works on offer at this auction is the brilliant landscape, Summer by Godfrey Miller (est: $65,000 – 85,000). Dated 1957-59, it was completed shortly after Miller painted Nude and the Moon, now in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Known for his perfectionism, Miller spent years constructing his major works and many were never fully realised. This makes the appearance at auction of such a significant and complete work particularly noteworthy.

Deutscher and Hackett are again pleased to offer another significant group of contemporary works including the mesmerising John Pule, In preparation for that promise (est: 30,000 - 40,000), which was acquired from the same exhibition as Mamalu now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. Other contemporary artists represented in this auction include, Peter Booth, Bill Henson, Tim Maguire, De Kathryn Barton and Callum Morton, amoung others.
