Deutscher and Hackett achieves strong result in April Fine Art Auction

Deutscher and Hackett is pleased to announce strong results for its April auction Australian and International fine art. Offering a broad selection of rare, fresh to the market and competitively priced works, the auction attracted spirited bidding from local, national and international buyers.
To a packed room of over 200 people, the sale had strong start with a selection of high quality contemporary works all selling well. A new auction record was set for Ben Quilty with the work Australian Landscape #2 - Colt 2005,achieving $36,000.
The Hicks Family Collection of Social Realism followed, attracting significant interest from national, state and regional galleries, who accounted for 20 acquisitions of works of art in the auction. With the collection achieving a sale rate of 75% by volume, its highlights included Jeffrey Smart’s Sunday Morning Service which achieved $210,000 against an estimate of 80,000 – 120,000, and Herbert Badham’s The Night Bus which sold for $72,000 with an estimate of $25,000 - 35,000.
Four works from the Social Realism collection set new auction records, indicating a new strength in the market. New Auction records were set for Weaver Hawkins, Technicolour c1944, which sold for $52,800, Harald Vike, Self Portrait c1944, achieving $31,200, George Duncan, Rainy Day 1923, bringing $24,000, and Edmund Harvey Sinn Fein 1933, selling for $21,600.
Contemporary works of exceptional quality continue to sell well, with an outstanding work, Jingle Jangle Morning, by New Zealand artist Bill Hammond realizing a record amount of $276,000, Howard Arkley’s Freeway Exit 1995 bringing $108,000 and Christo’s Wrapped Sydney Opera House also achieving $108,000 against strong international interest.
