deutscher and hackett are pleased to announce the exceptional result of $8.6million* achieved at its inaugural auction in Melbourne on 9 and 10 May 2007. With strong clearance rates of 84% by value and 77% by volume for the 274 works offered, indeed the result clearly asserts the new company’s position amongst the leaders of the Australian art auction industry.
Notably, an impressive total of 24 works were sold in excess of $100,000, including Fred Williams, Silver Landscape 1964 ($456,000); Albert Tucker, Australian Girl in Paris 1957 ($312,000); Jeffrey Smart, Waiting for the Hovercraft, Boulogne 1986-87 ($300,000); Sidney Nolan, Burke and Wills 1964 ($288,000) and William Robinson, To Beechmont with Storm Clouds 2002 ($264,000).
Moreover, amidst the spirited bidding in the crowded Melbourne gallery, new auction records were realised for six artists with the following results: Robert Dowling, Masters George, William and Miss Harriet Ware with the Aborigine Jamie Ware 1856 which was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria prior to auction for $810,000; Bronwyn Oliver, Tendril 2001 ($162,000); Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Blue Travellers 2003 ($102,000); Rick Amor, The City 6am 1989-90 ($78,000); Dale Hickey, Easel Painting 2004 ($48,000); and Richard Larter, Stripperama No. 4 1964 ($33,600).
