deutscher and hackett Achieves Top Result for 26 November Auction, Melbourne
deutscher and hackett’s sale results defied the downturn in the final round of auctions in a highly competitive market. With strong clearance rates of 73% by value and 72% by volume, their auction total of $3,127,260 (inc Buyer Premium) eclipsed the results of their international competitors.
For the first time, deutscher and hackett’s sale result exceeded Sotheby’s, indicating that the market is still relatively strong when offered high quality, realistically priced works.
Sale highlights for modern works included: Sidney Nolan, Riverbank, 1964, which achieved $432,000; Studio of Charles Meere, Australian Beach Pattern, c1940, realising $240,000; and Margaret Preston, Australian Glory Flower, 1928, bringing $156,000.
A strong contemporary art offering produced exceptional results with Tim Maguire’s Untitled (Wild Berries), 2003, selling for $120,000; Shaun Gladwell’s video work, Pataphysical Man, 2005, achieving $49,200; eX de Medici’s, A Cool Hand with the Dice/Biggie, 2007, bringing $52,800; and Peter Booth’s, Painting, 2005, attracting $90,000.
Institutional bidding was strong with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa acquiring the Colin McCahon, Mondrian’s Last Chrysanthemum: Scared, 1976, for $312,000, amongst other institutional purchases.
