lmpressive Result of $6.9m at deutscher and hackett

deutscher and hackett's second fine art auction achieved the strong result of $6.9M* in Melbourne last night. Clearance rates of 85% by value and 72% by volume for the 197 works offered indicate that the market is still strong for quality works which had great appeal for collectors in all genres.

Overall, there were 17 works which sold in excess of $100,000.

Highlights of the auction were Brett Whiteley's Vincent 1968 which sold for $1,020,000, Arthur Streeton's North Shore, Sydney, 1892 ($372,000), the Howard Arkley work A Splendid Superior Home, 1989 ($324,000), Rosalie Gascoigne's News Break, 1994 ($300,000), Fred Williams' You Yangs Landscape,1974 ($264,000), the much admired John Peter Russell work Portrait of Dodge Macknight,c1887 ($228,000), Jeffrey Smart's Children Skating in a Garage, c1967 ($216,000), a second Whiteley work Summer's Bay,cI962 ($204,000) and John Peter Russell's Pivoines Blanches, c1886-88, ($204,000).

Auction records were set for the following artists, Rah Fizelle Seated Woman, 1932-33 ($93,000), Tony Tuckson Big Red W, c1964 ($114,000), Del Kathryn Barton Bearing Gifts, 2003 ($138,000), Bronwyn Oliver Skein,2004 ($192,000) and John Passmore The Bathers, 1951 ($312,000).

Del Kathryn Barton, one of the most critically acclaimed figures in Australian contemporary art and a relative newcomer to the auction market, smashed her previous record of $49,200 for Confetti Rain, 2005, which sold earlier this year.

deutscher and hackett will hold its final auction for the year in Sydney on 29 November 2007.
