D+H AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ART AUCTION DELIVERS OUTSTANDING RESULTS

With enthusiastic attendances at viewings in Sydney and Melbourne the fortnight prior, Deutscher and Hackett’s first live auction for 2026, Important Australian Indigenous Art, once again witnessed an active room, complemented by fervent bidding across telephone and internet platforms with national and, increasingly, international participation. Attracting a wide audience of passionate collectors, this eagerly awaited instalment of D+H's flagship Indigenous art auction achieved the outstanding total of $4,670,000 (inc. BP and GST) with many works notably exceeding their auction estimates - resulting in the elevated clearance rates of 120% by value and 88% by volume. Such impressive results attest to the ever-growing demand and appreciation both locally and abroad for quality works by Australia's finest Indigenous artists. Auction highlights include Emily Kam Kngwarreye's stunning immersive polyptych Awelye I, II, III, IV, 1995 which sold for $437,500 (inc. BP and GST), and the catalogue cover picture, Rover Thomas' widely acclaimed Langurr (The Rainbow Serpent making the river), 1991, which achieved $400,000 (inc. BP and GST). Significantly, new auction records were also realised for the following five artists: Timo Hogan, Nyapanyapa Yunupiŋu, Gunybi Ganambarr, Jacky Baimunungbi and Billy Lanyirrda. |
