This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Jilamara Arts and Crafts which states:
‘Traditional Tiwi Culture placed special significance on the Pukumani (funeral) ceremony. Mourners are decorated using natural ochres as a disguise themselves from the spirit of the deceased and song and dance is performed to honour the dead. Pwoja (bodypaint) is the source of many contemporary Tiwi designs and performance of the pukumani as ritual helps to reinvigorate the imagery.’

Marielle Soni was an arts professional with over 25 years’ experience, promoting contemporary Australian art and artists in both the public and private sectors. A senior art consultant for Artbank for over a decade, Marielle also held the position of Art Coordinator at Jilamara Arts and Crafts in the Tiwi Islands and curatorial positions in commercial galleries in Melbourne in addition to working privately as an art consultant and writer.

The work has been float mounted and housed in a white timber box frame under perspex.
