Overview

With over fifty years’ experience providing advice to Australia’s leading public galleries and private collectors alike, Deutscher and Hackett’s team of art specialists bring the integrity, rigour and professional recognition required for more formal art valuations. In addition to complimentary auction appraisals, our services cover a wide range of needs such as insurance, market, family division, probate and superannuation fund valuations.

We also value art on a regular basis for the Cultural Gifts Program, offering tax incentives for donations to registered public institutions. Our valuation fees vary according to the category as well as the time required for completion. Fees may be reimbursed if the works of art valued are subsequently sold with Deutscher and Hackett. There are no fees associated with auction appraisals and accompanying proposals.

Market

Current market value is defined as the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between two willing parties in an arm’s length transaction. Deutscher and Hackett is available to undertake a current market assessment of your artwork, either by visiting one of our galleries in Melbourne or Sydney and speaking with one of our specialists, or requesting a complimentary appraisal online or via email. Out of town appraisal appointments are also possible with our specialists around Australia several times throughout the year.

Insurance

A valuation for insurance assesses the cost of replacing an asset with another of substantially comparable nature. This is the most common form of valuation and Deutscher and Hackett regularly undertakes for clients who require for inclusion in either their general household insurance or specialist collection policy.

Estate and property division

Valuations for Estate and Property Division are typically based upon market value, assessing the forecast value of an artwork at auction at a specified date to ensure assets are distributed in a fair and equitable manner. With our reputation for professionalism, discretion and transparency, Deutscher and Hackett is often engaged by executors of estates, beneficiaries and lawyers to provide such valuations for not only for estate division, but also divorce property settlements.

Cultural gifts program

If donating a culturally significant work of art to a public gallery, museum or library, a private collector may be entitled to a tax deduction for the market value of the gift. Deutscher and Hackett is well qualified to assist with the comprehensive documentation and process of due diligence required for such gifts made under the Cultural Gifts Program. Notably, Chris Deutscher was one of the two approved valuers involved in the donation of Dr Joseph Brown’s incomparable collection of Australian art to the National Gallery of Victoria in May 2004 – the most generous single gift of works of art ever made to a public gallery in Australia.
