An Australian auction record for the artist
November 2019, Melbourne

Since its establishment in 2007, Deutscher and Hackett has become Australia’s leading auction house for important Australian art – widely recognised for its exceptional results, scholarly catalogues and highly considered presentation of works spanning Colonial, Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary periods. With galleries in both Melbourne and Sydney, the company has sold approximately half a billion dollars of fine art at auction, and notably, has achieved the highest price at live auction in Australia for each of the past five years.

Deutscher and Hackett also continues to hold the auction record for some of Australia’s most pre-eminent artists, including Arthur Streeton, John Peter Russell, Bessie Davidson, Grace Cossington Smith, Margaret Preston, Ian Fairweather, Godfrey Miller, Rosalie Gascoigne, and Howard Arkley. Additionally, the firm has achieved the highest price at auction in the past six years for works by Russell Drysdale and John Brack, alongside the highest price for Brett Whiteley in the past five years.

Significantly, in 2022 the company achieved the highest ever annual turnover for an art auction house in this country ($52.7 million), and in 2024, realised the then-highest mixed-vendor Australian art auction total in seventeen years, realising more than $16.5 million for its April sale.

Distinguished by the scale and experience of its team of six fine art specialists – each renowned for their integrity, commitment and expertise – Deutscher and Hackett is exceptionally well placed to guide clients through every stage of the buying and selling process. Drawing upon decades of experience across leading public institutions, commercial galleries and auction houses, the company is equally highly regarded for its impeccably researched auction catalogues and considered presentation of works of art. Indeed, each auction is underpinned by meticulous research, careful catalogue preparation and strategic marketing, with essays and scholarship regularly commissioned from prominent art historians, former museum directors and senior curators affiliated with institutions including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and Queensland Art Gallery – thus reflecting the company’s longstanding engagement with Australia’s broader academic and museum community.

Such depth of scholarship – alongside strong relationships with major private collectors and institutions – ensures every work we handle is presented with authority, discretion and focused market engagement.
